Dental Implant Mistakes

If you or someone you know has suffered from a dental implant mistake and believe it was due to poor dental treatment, you should contact Brendan F. Mulligan, the dental injury attorney.

Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically screwed into the upper and lower jaw to replace missing teeth.  For the implant to work, it must integrate with the bone and that is why the dentist must give the bone to time to heal and make sure no pressure is placed on the implant. After healing, the dentist can then place a crown, dental bridge or even denture over the implant to replace any missing teeth.

Dental implants are wonderful if they are done properly. Unfortunately, many implants are placed improperly and/or incorrectly causing the patient to suffer serious and permanent injury.

Nerve Injury Due to Dental Implants

Nerve injury is one of the most common problems associated with poor implant placement and often occurs because the dentists placed the implant to deep. If the dentist took proper X-rays and measurements before hand this injury is typically avoided.

Sinus infection and perforation is another major issue associated with poor implant placement and occurs because the implant was placed too far and/or a sinus lift procedure was not performed before implant placement.

Incorrect implant placement can also result in the implant itself failing. Placing an implant in an unhealthy bone will as matter of course always fail. Placing an implant to close to a natural tooth or outside the normal u-shaped arch of the mouth will also fail. If the implant fails so will the crown, bridge or denture that was placed on top of it.

All of these problems can be avoided with proper treatment planning by the dentist and making sure that when you have dental implant treatment that it is done by a reputable dentist. If you’ve experienced any of the problems mentioned or have other concerns regarding dental implant treatment that you believe was poorly done, remember to call Brendan F. Mulligan, D.M.D., Esquire, the dental malpractice attorney.
